Let's Talk about the Holidays

  • The Portland Grief House 7906 North Fessenden Street Portland, OR, 97203 United States (map)

Holidays are usually a time to celebrate, spend time with relatives and friends, and share traditions. However, when we are grieving, these events, celebrations, or traditions feel contradicting to our heavy hearts. Sometimes we need to keep the customs alive for our children or other family members, but this doesn't mean we must ignore our needs or desires during the holidays.    I invite anyone who is grieving/lost a loved one and is looking for a space and community to examine what traditions, holidays, or celebrations they want to continue, modify or remove altogether. This event is a space for you to work out your needs and wants regarding the upcoming holidays, so when asked about your desires, you can communicate clearly how you want to spend these forthcoming festivities.

Topics to discuss during the event:

  • Acknowledging your grief and human needs

  • Plan ahead

  • Define tasks and delegate

  • Set conscientious boundaries

  • Change shoulds for wants/needs

  • Communicate clearly your needs because you already know what you need

  • Honor past traditions/Create new ones

  • Celebrate life, how to integrate our loved ones who have passed away while
